CHAPTER NINE - THE DEVIL YOU KNOW
Having his mates standing at his side was one of the most intoxicating things he’d ever known. Standing in a room surrounded by family and friends only made the sense of perfection so much better. They had just informed Knox and Ainslie about their thoughts on Braxx and Mannix and were getting ready to shimmer to the Challus Coven to start the next part of their mission.
Mercer had never been one to make harsh judgements on another person. But the more he heard from Scott Creely and their other guests the more he wanted to go out and kill people. Pity that most of the people he wanted to kill were already dead. Now in the time of the Sons of Evenmore, they were given the task of hunting down the last of the betrayers. If only they could work out who they were.
Chex had once again evaded capture, which only pissed everyone off even more. There was no sign of Fields having been in nowhere with him, so God only knows what happened to him. Personally, Mercer hoped the prick had died a harsh and gruesome death for his part in all of this. The man on the top of the most wanted list was Dr Laurance Clarke, for not only working with the human enemy but for also offering up shifters to be experimented on. The good doctor needed to be dealt with and Mercer was in the mind to let him be treated as he’d done to his own kind.
“So what you’re telling us is we need to be nosy but to watch our backs because something funky is going on in the Challus Coven?”
Mercer bit back a laugh as he listened to Jhex. He loved the way his mate didn’t sugar-coat his words and just said it like it was.
“Yes, Jhex. Watch your backs because someone in the Challus Coven knows what the hell happened to Phoenix. His disappearance wasn’t a fluke. Someone had to have let the enemy in.”
“This is so fucked up,” Jhex spat out. “At least tell me that if I find the fucker to blame I can kick his arse?”
Mercer was in total agreement. He wanted to rip the balls off of the person responsible for Phoenix’s capture and subsequent torture. “I promise you, mate—if we find them—I’ll personally help you tear them apart.”
A grunt of agreement was all he got in return from Jhex.
“Just make sure you get any and all information from the person before you kill them,” Dom added helpfully.
Mercer looked across the room to Braxx and Mannix. “What happens if the person involved is a member of your family?”
“Then they die,” the twins said in unison.
Mannix added, “Even though it’s possible our immediate family is involved, something in my gut is telling me the focus should be elsewhere. Mum and Dad were strict with us when we all lived together, but I have no doubt they loved us. And our older sister Cassidy would never harm Phoenix.
